Kate Bruce has been a student of West African drumming for over fifteen years, and a keen percussionist for much longer. Her particular interest in this style of music began as soon as she first experienced the djembe drumming style at a lesson recommended by a friend. It was going to be a one-off, but it had her totally hooked. Seckou Keïta, Sidiki Dembélé, Iya Sako, Babara Bangoura, Hans Sutton and Mamady Keïta are particular inspirational stars she has been lucky enough to learn from over the years, being motivated by their values and attitude as much as the music itself. Kate has also studied the associated dancing styles which accompany the drumming, and has travelled to Senegal to learn more about these wonderful historically rich art forms in their cultural context.
Kate really enjoys passing on some of her drumming knowledge, as well as performing regularly at various shows and festivals. Taking part in frequent drum workshops and camps, soaking in new rhythms and jamming with fellow drummers and musicians are her favourite ways to spend time.
